The Finnish Tax Administration during an audit of restaurants found that about 11 million euros of tax remained unpaid, said the Tax Office in a press release on Thursday.
The authority conducted the audit of 373 restaurants of mostly Pizza, Kebab and Chinese foods in the last two years and found that majority of them responsible for the unpaid tax.
A total of 198 or 53 percent of the audited restaurants were found to violate the tax rules seriously, which prompted the authority to file criminal charges against them.
“The targets were selected based on our own risk analysis. Our analysis shows that normally small and medium sized kebab or pizza restaurants are involved in tax evasion,” Tarja Valsi, director of the crime division of Tax Administration said in the press release.
The irregularities took place in income taxes, value-added taxes, withholding taxes and employer payments.
Valsi said that the irregularity in tax payment is more common in foreigners´ owned company compared to Finnish restaurant companies.
