Schools, nurseries closed in Sweden after threats, suspect detained

Several schools and nurseries were closed on Wednesday in Borlange, Sweden, as a precaution after threats of possible violence, reported Xinhua, quoting local authorities.

The closures affected a number of educational institutions, including preschools, primary schools, upper secondary schools and adult education facilities in Borlange, a municipality about 200 km northwest of the Swedish capital Stockholm.

Municipal Director Jorgen Olsson said at a press conference that alarming information about the threat had begun circulating among students on Monday and reached school staff on Tuesday.

The municipality chose to act proactively, Olsson said.

An assistant regional police chief said at the same press conference that police had launched a major operation but had not identified the source of the threat by noon local time.

"We are now conducting a large number of interviews to trace where the threat originated," he said, adding that major police resources had been deployed.

Later on Wednesday, police took in a suspect believed to be behind the threat, according to Swedish Television (SVT). The case is being investigated as aggravated unlawful threat against a group.

Daniel Falt, head of communications for Borlange Municipality, told SVT that there was no longer any ongoing threat. Swedish news agency TT reported that the detained person was a male in his late teens. Schools and nurseries are expected to reopen on Thursday.
