Romania's National Meteorological Administration (ANM) issued multiple weather alerts on Friday as the country prepares for an intense heatwave, along with unstable atmospheric conditions expected over the weekend, reported Xinhua.
The agency has placed 15 counties under a Code Red heatwave alert, the highest level in its three-tier warning system. The alert is in effect from Saturday at 10:00 a.m. local time until Sunday at 10:00 a.m. local time.
According to forecasts, temperatures will soar to between 39 degrees Celsius and 43 degrees Celsius, mainly in southern and western regions. High humidity levels will lead to severe thermal discomfort, with nighttime lows ranging from 22 degrees Celsius to 25 degrees Celsius, conditions that qualify as tropical nights.
A Code Orange alert has been issued for 16 other counties, which will also face extreme heat, with temperatures reaching up to 39 degrees Celsius and prolonged thermal discomfort.
On Friday, large parts of the country are expected to record temperatures between 37 degrees Celsius and 40 degrees Celsius.
ANM noted that the heatwave will gradually shift toward southern and eastern Romania by Sunday evening, while unstable weather patterns are forecast to develop in western, central, and northern regions starting Saturday night.
