Firefighter dies in Portugal as storm death toll rises to 14

A firefighter from the Campo Maior fire brigade died on Saturday during a patrol, reconnaissance and surveillance operation following severe weather and storm, according to Portugal's National Emergency and Civil Protection Authority (ANEPC), reported Xinhua.

With this death, the number of fatalities linked to the storm that has ravaged mainland Portugal has risen to 14.

The National Republican Guard added that the victim was 46 years old and also served as a guard at the Campo Maior Territorial Post.

The operation in which the firefighter was involved took place on National Road 373, in a confluence zone with the Caia River in Campo Maior, about 190 km east of Lisbon.

Emergency services remain on high alert across Portugal's coastal areas and interior regions as authorities coordinate response operations to severe weather conditions.

The storm has also caused widespread damage, including the destruction of homes, businesses and equipment, fallen trees and structures, road closures, disruptions to schools and transport services, and cuts to energy, water and communications.

The government has extended the Situation of Calamity until the 15th to 68 municipalities.
