EU, Iceland to start security talks

Iceland and the European Union (EU) are set to launch negotiations on a security and defense partnership, Icelandic Prime Minister Kristrun Frostadottir announced on Thursday, reported Xinhua.

The announcement was made during a joint press conference with European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen in Keflavik, southwestern Iceland.

They indicated that formal negotiations could begin in the coming weeks or months, and expressed hope for a conclusion by year's end.

Frostadottir also confirmed that a national referendum on restarting EU accession talks is on the government's agenda.
