One man was killed in an explosion in a pedestrian underpass in Völklingen, a town in western Germany near the French border, police said on Saturday, reported dpa.
Four other men were seriously injured, two of them with life-threatening injuries, according to police.
Investigators believe the explosion was caused "by human action," police said, without initially giving further details.
Police received several emergency calls shortly after midnight reporting a loud bang and a person screaming for help, a spokesman said.
Officers found five men in the underpass. One of them died at the scene, while the four injured men were taken to hospital.
Police cordoned off the underpass and said there was no danger to the public, while investigators worked to determine the cause of the explosion.
It also remained unclear what kind of object had exploded. Police appealed to the public for information.
Völklingen is a town of about 40,000 people a few kilometres west of Saarbrücken.
